The Drupe Diaries: 1–Anticipation and Eagerness

I love the Drupe family.  Do you like the Drupes too?  You know, the fruits with the hard stone pit in the middle.  What did you think I was talking about, actual people?  I’m talking about peaches and plums.  They are in abundance here in Spain rightDSC00938 now, and I am lucky enough to have an actual plum tree in my little patch of lawn.  So, I am sharing my current Prunus Domestica obsession with you all.  As I patiently wait for the picking and gear up to bite into a juicy, tart, then sweet plum.  I plan on juicing them, canning them as plum jam, and of course, eating them in their natural state.  Oh the anticipation!

My eagerness got the best of me and last week when I shook the tree ever so gently/violently with the force of my zeal (I had to apologize to it afterward) to make any ripe ones fall off of it.  Well, a few dropped on the lawn, as well as on my little guy’s head (he was in on this mischief) and I was so excited!  I immediately ran to the kitchen laboratory, DSC00945rinsed and bit into one.  I was then slapped in the face with tartness…they are not ready.  I took with this a lesson from nature that day.  Good (sweet/juicy) things come to those who wait.  So I cleaned the remaining plums and put them in a bag and started to hurry up and wait.

Well, today I peeked in the bag, picked one out and bit into it.  Tears of joy ran down my face as mother nature rewarded me for my patience and gave me a burst of sweetness in my mouth!  Just when I thought I couldn’t handle this delicious surge of it’s sweet nectar, a tart taste ran right behind it.  That tiny tart surge I enjoyed at the last bit of flesh surrounding it’s precious stone pit reminded me of my eagerness.  Nature rewarded me and yet reminded me in the same bite ‘remember what this could taste like next time yo’ a$$ doesn’t want to wait and shake my tree too soon again!’  Okay, okay, I hear you.  I am sorry and note taken.

Love you Drupes.  For now I’ll keep watching you through my window when I wake up, and enjoy watering you while looking at your sweet plums ripening on the branch.  One day soon I will pick and enjoy the rest of your sweet juicy treats.

Added bonus: plums are Dr. Sebi approved, yay!
