Flax Hair Snot…what?

The ingredients are simple, whole flaxseeds, water and essential oils (optional). My intention was to make an all natural gentle alternative to the harsh, drying chemical goo that is, hair gel.  I like gel, it helps my hair to hold it’s place in the world.  However, I do not like the ingredients or the damage it can cause.   This DIY attempt to make a hair gel, appeared to be a disaster, when it came out like snot.  I mean literally, a runny, gooey mucous like, hair concoction mess, yuck!

I said to myself “there is no way I’m putting that in my hair!”..  Soon after I gawked at my finished product and shunned it for it’s disgusting appearance, I realized that I was being a judgmental snob.  I mean, that is how the evil powers of consumerism get us, by appearances.  So, I decided to not let this creation go to waste and give it a try.  Believe it or not, it was GREAT!  I applied a ton to my hair, styled it while damp and loved the results the following day.  Hair snot is not so bad.  It has to keep in the refrigerator or it will smell like a turd.  So you will have turd snot, lol.  I left it out in my bathroom overnight and I had to toss the rest of it, because even I have my limits.

Has anyone out there (who is NOT a youtube celebrity) ever had success with this flaxseed hair gel?

How To Make Your Own Hair Snot (chemical free gel)

Ingredients/supplies:

  • 1/4 cup of whole Flaxseeds
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • Jar to store your snot, I mean gel
  • pot to piss in, I mean boil (horrible humor, I know)
  • Strainer (mesh, cheesecloth, pantyhose)
  • *optional* Vitamin E, Lavender & Rosemary Essential Oils (I didn’t have any on hand so mine was plain.  These oils serve as a great preservative, add nourishment for your hair, and makes it smell MUCH better)

You also need a strainer of some sort (not shown here)

Just put the water and flaxseeds in your pot and start boiling

Watch over it and stir, making sure it doesn’t boil over or burn.  After several minutes you’ll see it start to thicken up.  Keep boiling until it’s pretty thick then take off the heat.  It will thicken even more as it cools.

Run it through your strainer.  I used a tea strainer, which in my opinion, didn’t really work, it was going through waaaaay too slow.  Then I tried a pair of pantyhose (my version of cheesecloth?) and it was moving slower than a snail’s pace.

This part of the process was such a tease.  I saw all this potential gel inside the stocking, but couldn’t get it out!!! ugh. I then threw in the towel (or pantyhose) and was content with the remains you see in the jar.

Now look in this jar and tell me you don’t see a bunch of snot rockets??!!

Sorry, I don’t have any pictures of my actual hairstyle from the finished project.  However, don’t fret my humungous group of viewers (oh the optimistic sarcasm) I’ll be sure to make this again, and will post an update along with a pic of what this magic hair snot can do.

Next Time around, I think I will just maneuver the whole flaxseeds out with a spoon or something instead of wasting my last nerve and patience on straining it.  The only thing you’re trying to get out are the seeds anyway.

If you have done this before, would you please share your wisdom and experience???
