You’ve probably heard or experienced the wonders of superfoods such as wheatgrass, kale, spirulina, acai berry or even chia seeds— but have you heard all the wonders of sea moss?  Sea moss (or Irish Moss) is a superfood that more people should be aware of, so here I am sharing with you my love of this algae in hopes that you will look for this little nutritional gem next time your stocking up your cabinets.  I have seen and felt the benefits of adding a powder form to my smoothies and teas by way of weight loss, better digestion and bowel movements, increased energy levels, libido (ooh!) and a brighter complexion.  Here are my five top reasons why Sea Moss needs to be bought in bulk and have it’s praises sung from the rooftops all over the globe, enjoy!:

  1. Great for Metabolism: This wonder food is low in calories, has zero cholesterol or fat, and has the nerve to contain fiber!  It contains many vital and essential nutrients responsible for turning glucose into energy (not fat!), improving your metabolism, blood sugar levels, and controlling apetite.  This along with the fiber will help with digestion, act as a natural laxative flushing out all of that nasty sludge from your colon, and help you feel full and satisfied.  So if you’re looking to increase your energy levels, improve your metabolism, or effortlessly shed unwanted (and unwelcomed) body fat, this nutrient dense superfood may be your answer.  Remember that malnutrition makes many people fat (not just skinny).
  2. Great for the Blood: Anemia is a common complaint nowadays, and people are in need of IRON.  Well this sea veggie contains a great amount of iron and it’s complimenting nutrient, Vitamin C–making it absorbable and ready to enter your blood stream.  Iron will help build hemoglobin in your red blood cells.  This means more oxygen will be breathed into your cells and throughout your body from your lungs, and also helps your liver function properly.
  3. Great for the Thyroid: This algae comes equipped with the essential mineral, iodine.  Iodine helps the thyroid gland to function properly and aids in fighting off disease and free radical damage.  Iodine is something that many people are deficient in due to diet (cabbage, Brussel sprouts and broccoli/cauliflower are antagonistic to Iodine) soil mineral depletion, a decrease in consuming iodized table salt in addition to other reasons–but by adding this sea veggie goodness, you’ll have no worries.

  4. Great for the Bones: Calcium is good for the bones–this is a well known fact.  It’s also responsible for your heart beating, metabolizing Iron, absorbing Vitamin B12 and a slew of other magical tricks.  Calcium needs to be accompanied with other nutrients (Vitamins D, K and Magnesium) to be efficiently absorbed.  Sea moss has a nice marriage of Calcium and Magnesium.  The Vitamin K you can get from the leafy greens in your sea moss smoothie, and drink it outside so you can soak up your Vitamin D 😉 Bones and blood are covered and your heart will be skipping beats of joy from all of the nourishment your raining upon it!
  5. Great Mucilage for Colds, Acne, Disease, Pneumonia–Darn near everything: Sea moss is a demulcent –responsible for soothing irritated or inflamed mucous membranes as well as protect them.  The mucilage that lends it the awesome sliminess, absorbes toxins from your colon in addition to absorbing water, yielding you softer stools.  The superfood can help ease coughing (dry coughs) and bronchial tension by breaking up and ridding your body of mucous.  Basically this superfood can soothe, heal and protect you from the inside (colon, lungs, mucous membranes) out (topically as a mask).

There you have it, my top five reasons why I love this super food underdog.  It’s a wonder to me why people are not using this as often as the other superfoods like spirulina, kale or acai–oh well, now you know beautiful people!  I sincerely hope this read motivates you to run to your nearest health food, whole foods, or click Amazon open and start searching for this sea veggie jewel.  Bladderwrack is also a great sea vegetable that I’ll brag about at a later date.

There are different ways to prepare and take this powerful sea vegetable.  I prefer it in powder form and add it to my smoothies, teas and some recipes (I sneak it in everything).  Capsules are available or you can boil the vegetable.  One product that I personally recommend is the Dr Sebi Bromide Plus Powder.  This man and his products won a supreme court case proving that he not only has cured AIDS, but that his products are cell vegetation food.  Meaning, they literally cleanse and nourish you on a cellular level–clearing out damage and mucous, and restoring healthy ph balances with his nutritional guide.  I know that bomb I just dropped about AIDS is pretty far out there, but if you do the research you’ll find the case that I’m talking about.  Needless to say, the medical industry doesn’t care for him lol.  Why would they?  He would run them out of business by healing everyone in the hospital.

Some recent studies by Dr. Joanne Tobacman of the University of Illinois is now raising concerns as to whether or not carrageenan is a carcinogen and causes inflammation.  I would like to point out that these studies are on carrageenan, an extraction of red algae after is has been processed with an alkali solution to form this food additive and used as a thickening agent in many foods (including non-dairy milk).  Sea moss as you have read has a slew of health benefits, but this study is speaking of it’s extracted sulphated polysaccharide.  Please keep this in mind when seeing the negative buzz on blogs and medical journals and do not be pumped with fear of this beautiful red algae.

Be sure to follow for more recipes, tips and veggie jewels 🙂

I am not paid for my opinions or recommendations for Dr. Sebi’s Cell food products–just sharing what I know and learning as I go 🙂
