One Secret to Aging Well

This secret isn’t about diets, superfoods, supplements or exercise.  This secret is one probably many of your elders did  as a way to relax, make ends meet, or keep warm in the winter.  I’m talking about crocheting and knitting.  This yarn craft deserves much more attention.FullSizeRender(7)

There have been several studies done on the benefits of meditative work (yes, this yarn craft is in this category) and bettering your neuroplasticity.

Research finds The relaxation, calmness, clarity and the rhythmic action of repeated stitching are highly reminiscent of meditation practices and forms of meditation have been studied for their effects on the brain.

Neuroplasticity is what keeps your mind quick and by keeping this intact as much as possible, you have the upper hand in the battle of alzheimers and becoming senile in your old age.  This handy craft is not just for little old ladies, but for all ages, and both genders as well.  Hall of fame football player, the gentle giant Rosey Grier knits, crochets and even does needlepoint!  Check out his book here.

Now this is a Real Man!

My personal benefits and testimony to this craft is that it keeps you from overeating, keeps my brain stimulated and I constantly feel triumphant over the things I’ve put into this world.  When you do things with your hands that don’t involve a fork or a spoon, you don’t do a lot of mindless munching.  The self satisfaction you feel when you complete a purse, scarf, hat, or just a coaster is amazing.  You have physical matter in your hands that you literally created with your mind.  You put thought into what you told your fingers to do and how to tie those knots.  From those thoughts came whatever it was you imagined in your mind.  It’s a wonderfully deep thing…trust me.

I crochet meditated this scarf and purse with my first crochet hook passed down from my Grandmother.  No Pattern, just thoughts, yarn, a hook and hands.

My grandmother taught me when I was a young child (6 or 7).  It was a way for us to bond and have girl time that didn’t involve too much childhood chatter and lamenting over the mistreatment I thought I was receiving from my big brother and cousins (sibling rivalry lol).  I am so thankful for the life lesson of having the power to create anything I wanted, with my mind and my hands.  Thank you Grandma.

Will you take up this hobby?  Will you take deep breaths and meditate on your stitches and counting your rows, just as a Buddhist counts their Mala beads during prayer?
