K Viva La Suegra!

A new friend wrote this perfect sentence on a FB of mine: K Viva La Suegra!  It sounds like a book title, bumper sticker or something on a cheesy Hallmark card right?  In English, I would translate it to “long live the mother-in-law”.  That may not be the exact translation, but that is what it means to me.  I smiled to myself with a warm heart when she wrote that because you don’t see many women giving props to the mother-in-laws very often.  At least, according to the media, television and movies you don’t.  Let them tell it, there’s always that monstrous Mother who never wants to let her son go, or let the wife in, no matter how many grandsons she brings to the Family Reunion.  I believe that this version of life is dramatic and kind of comical, which is why you see it in sitcoms and movies.  Who wants to watch a movie of a Mother-in-law who actually enjoys the company of her daughter-in-law, doesn’t overstep her boundaries, and actually allows her son to live his life with the woman of his choice?  That sounds so boring doesn’t it?  No one would spend $18 on that movie, yet, everyone would want to star in it.  I don’t know one sane woman who wouldn’t want that shoe to be on her foot–one of the loving mother-in-law.

I wrote about the Tumbleweed Concept of Love on Valentine’s Day.  Well, a Mother-in-Law has a lot of air to blow.  She has the power to make or break a relationship at times…I mean, she did create one of the people in the partnership.  She has a strong influence on the way the wind blows and how a marriage grows, if the two lovers allow it.  Actually, even if they don’t allow it, Mothers still posses that power.

Where am I going with all of this rambling?  I’m just thankful today.  I was thinking about my marriage and how smoothly it tumbles along.  My Husband and I were chatting one day and we said how often times, we are quiet about the comings and goings, or logistics of our marriage, because we don’t want to sound like we are bragging.  Our marriage isn’t perfect, but it damn near is.

It’s nearly perfect because we are fluid with the definition of perfection and concrete on the definition of love and commitment.

It’s also because we have a woman by our side, rooting us on: Maria.  She’s always been there with her support, advice, patience, teachings and laughter.  Oh, and hugs…lots of hugs.  She’s always spared a pray, positive thought and joyful tear for the sake of her love for her son, that drips over into our teacup of marriage.

What an interesting title! I’ll need to read this soon enough.

I’m so thankful for her.  Now I need to translate this into Spanish so she can read it.  Mother’s day is around the corner, and has already passed here in Spain.  It’s bittersweet for me, well, mostly sweet when I think about it because I have already lost my loving Mother in this physical world, but can still feel her guidance from another place.  I also, still have another Mother who is willing to pick up the slack and attempt to fill that void–even though it’s an impossible void to fill, she still shows me she’s there to at least try.  So now, I have a mother in every dimension possible ( I guess??).  I’m still trying to figure out how to look at things.  The truth is, I have many women who share their maternal and nurturing energy with me, and Maria is one of them, in addition to many others (My Aunt Brenda, Grandmother, etc.).

So signing off, with a smile and warm heart, that may have a few holes in it, but is still thankful to be beating and as full as it can possibly be.  🙂
