Crochet, Stress and Insomnia

Is there such a thing as self-inflicted insomnia?  If so, I think I just did that tonight.  It’s nearly 4:00 in the morning and I am still up, touching my pink keyboard and stretching my right thumb after crocheting non-stop for the past three hours.  Stitch after stitch, stuffing them with the remains of an old pillow, and thinking about my youngest King.  Children are so cute when toddlers, because they aren’t afraid to indulge and obsess.  Whether it be a food jag, a favorite color, animal or movie character–when they are obsessed with something, they are not ashamed of it.  My youngest little man is obsessed with dinosaurs, intelligent superheroes, and a movie that involves a fat, white robot (in addition to anything extremely “boyish”).

Where am I going with this?  Oh, so he’s obsession with this big, fat robot has lead me to this moment of insomnia and excitement right now.  I wanted so desperately for him to have a plush version of his favorite robot; to have and to hold, or just toss around and beat up.  Of course, there aren’t any stores here in Spain that would carry such a toy.  At times like this, I tap into the skills from my grandmother and start bringing my motherly desires into existence.  I mentioned in an earlier post, how hand crafts such as crocheting, knitting and needlework are proven to not only help with stress, but also help with aging and mental health.  Well, I am going to be one healthy old lady with the work I put in this evening.

I hope he likes it.  I hope he loves it.  I’m pretty sure he will.  He’s a young boy who saw his mother fiddling with white yarn yesterday, and today he’s going to wake up and find his favorite healthcare companion next to him.  He may not be perfect, but he was perfectly made with a lot of love from this determined Mama.

Goodness, I better get to sleep…

  1. Oh my gosh! This is such a beautiful post! I remember that robot (haven’t gotten a chance to watch the movie yet) and the doll looks so much like it!! He’s one lucky child to have such a caring and nurturing mom!
