Coconut, Hemp and Rye Oh My!

I broke a nightly fast with bites of creamy, tropical, nutty whole grain goodness.  In lieu of oatmeal with bananas (ugh), I indulged in a warm and creamy bowl of rye porridge with rolled rye oats.  This was a surprisingly decadent bowl, thanks to the complexity of tastes and textures.  Rolled rye oats slowly simmered in almond milk, garnished with shreds of sweet coconut, hemp seeds and fresh blueberries intimately stroked my taste buds and calmed my morning growl.  This bowl took to a tropical island where neither time or giggly tummies existed.  I closed my eyes with every bite and had visions of me laying on a beach, with long locs, a crocheted shawl protecting me from the harsh beach breeze, and my Boo feeding me cubes of cold watermelon and mangoes.  One day…One day.

I discovered that coconut is appropriate in every dish; rye is more than just a weird brown bread; hemp seeds will get stuck in your teeth when you eat it.  Every time.  Oh and one last thing: bananas aren’t necessary in every sweet vegan dish (thank goddess).  Breakfast is my favorite meal because it’s my way of claiming where my tummy druthers will lead me.  If I start my day off with something super green like a juice or smoothie, pasta and cookies would be on the horizon.  Now, I’m learning that when I start my day off with something hearty and filling like yummy hot cereals, I’m ready for a day of endurance.  Ready to take on whatever comes my way before noon, whether it be 20lb dumbbell curls, toddlers who refuse to get dressed and request homemade pancakes when we have to be out the door within 20 minutes, or even an impromptu twerking session (I’ll explain later)!  Bring it on!

Side-note: three ingredient pancakes are a lifesaver 🙂

Don’t you love it when food makes you think, feel and talk this way?  Try adding coconut flakes and hemp seeds to your morning oats or porridge along with your favorite berries.  You’ll be in for a similar ride of juicy fresh fruits popping in your mouth, along with gentle crunches of protein rich hemp seeds and the tropical and meaty chew of the coconut.
