Clean Little Secrets

Why do secrets always have to be “dirty?”  I mean, a lot times when one actually possesses and holds onto a secret, it’s for the greater good like protecting a friends feelings or protecting oneself anyway right?  The problem with secrets is that once they are disclosed, feelings of betrayal usually come with it.

I used to keep secrets from my children.  I used to sneak behind their back and spike their juice with my fresh green juice, or purée vegetables in their spaghetti sauce or mac & cheese.  I had to spend a lot of time in the kitchen to pull these healthy sabotage strategies off, which means so did my children (always chasing after mommy).   My toddler quickly saw what I was up to and started asking “what’s that mommy?!”, “that’s not chocolate!”, “that’s for me?”, “that’s not cheese!!”. Oh the exciting and innocent curiosity of a child, lol.  It was then that I realized what I thought was a clean little secret for his health was indeed a dirty secret that made my child feel betrayed.  As Mothers or any other person caring for a child, you worry about rejection when it comes to an idea that you have such strong convictions, like eating their greens.  I was acting on fear by secretly sneaking health in my child’s food, I was scared that he would freak out and refuse to eat my healthy versions.  This is a silly thought, because if I am his mother and I have been doing this since he started eating, why the hell would he object to something he already likes and sees as normal?

I realized I needed to involve my child in the cooking and prepping and get more creative.  My baby was so excited to see how food works, how things are made and the endless creations you can make with something as simple as cinnamon or spinach.  We now have fun learning together different ways to improve our diets and eat to live and fuel our bodies, not harm them.

I still sneak some stuff that I know my children may not necessarily like in my recipes for more nutritional value.  It’s great now though because they always ask “what did you put in this?”, after they take a bite and smile of course lol.

I learned that clean secrets aren’t secrets at all, just something other people don’t know about.  Now once they find out, your secret then is dirty because it was dragged through the mud of betrayal to be discovered.

Wow, I have way too much time on my hands, I mean I’m just talking about adding healthy stuff to children’s foods, hahaha!  It’s obviously time for bed because this topic is not that deep.  Leave a comment and let me know that I’m not alone in this convoluted thought.  Have you ever been found out by your children doing something with their best interest in mind?
